SLCPD Launches New Public Crime Map to Increase Transparency, Community Awareness

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) launched a new interactive Crime Map to give community members greater access to crime data in their neighborhoods.

This tool supports SLCPD’s ongoing commitment to transparency, accountability, and community-informed policing.

The Crime Map displays updated crime information from the past six months, with a new month of data added on the 4th day of each month.

Locations appear as anonymized intersections rather than exact addresses, balancing public awareness with individual privacy.

“In policing, transparency builds trust,” said SLCPD Chief Brian Redd. “By offering an easy-to-use crime map, we’re helping our community members stay informed and engaged. This is about building stronger partnerships between our residents, business community, and police.”

“Providing accessible information on our website, allows our community to make informed decisions about safety,” said Lindsay Larsen, Director of Data Science and Research for the SLCPD. “Our goal is to share more data with the public in the coming year.”

The SLCPD’s new Crime Map includes several filter options so users can adjust the view to their specific interests or concerns:

·       Filter by date or date range

·       Filter by community council boundaries

·       Filter by violent vs. property crime

·       Filter by crime type

These tools can help residents track trends over time, understand neighborhood-specific issues, and stay proactive in conversations around community safety.

Crimes are categorized using SLCPD’s internal methodology. It’s important to note: categories may differ from other datasets provided by state or federal agencies.

Also, one incident may appear as multiple crime entries if it involves more than one offense.

When the exact location of a crime is unknown, the reporting location—such as a hospital or SLCPD facility—may be used.

The map may also include incidents the SLCPD responded to outside city limits, typically when assisting partner agencies.

The map uses the NAD 1983 State Plane Utah Central FIPS 4302 (US Feet) spatial reference.

The new Crime Map is intended for situational awareness and general trend tracking. It is not a substitute for official crime statistics, comprehensive case investigations or media statements.

The data is preliminary and subject to change as cases develop. The SLCPD’s data team has taken steps to ensure accuracy.

Community members can access the SLCPD Crime Map at:

The SLCPD encourages community members to explore the map, share it with their council districts, and use the data to engage in collaborative, informed efforts to keep Salt Lake City safe.
